Moving Journal – Moving Day -1

After the relatively late night we wanted to finish loading up as quickly as possible so we could get moving early the next day on our long adventure. As luck would have it though that was not to be.

We started off well, Alex and I went and grabbed some breakfast and headed over to the house. Problem was – it started to snow! This was very unexpected and made loading slow and not to mention COLD. Alex was a pretty good help and we started to load the outdoor furniture and the rest of the boxes.

This pretty much went on all day – moving all of the stuff out of the back rooms of the house to the front room and finally to the garage. From there we eliminated garbage and goodwill stuff. I called my client that runs the local office of 1-800-GOT-JUNK and scheduled a pickup from those guys. That I knew would be a bit spendy, but was certainly going to be worth it as I wouldn’t have to go to the dump or more specifically – rent another truck load it and drive it to the dump. Unfortunately for both myself and my landlord the house wasn’t fully ready for the walkthrough which wasn’t a terribly pleasant meeting.

The truck was pretty close to being loaded around 7:30 but there was still work to do. Problem was that the kids were over at our friend’s place again and while horsing around Alex fell and cut his head open. Tassy called me and wanted me to take him to the ER. I called Tassy’s mom, who was driving our SUV back from getting a tire repaired and she said she’d run by and check on Alex while I closed up the truck and house. I finally got over to check on Alex and his cut wasn’t as bad as it sounded. It was a split cut a little less than an centimeter long. Knowing the ER would likely only throw a butterfly bandage (or at most a stitch or two) and it would take at best a couple of hours I decided to see if I could take care of it with a butterfly strip of my own. Alex had finally calmed down so I dropped Tassy and the rest of the crew off at the hotel we would stay at that night and ran over to the drugstore to pick up the bandaids that would patch him up. I had him patched up and happy in just a few minutes rather than hours. He wasn’t really bleeding anymore and the butterfly strip closed the wound pretty easily.

We all had dinner at the hotel and we headed back to the house for the final push to load the truck. Our friend JJ, who did WAY more than her fair share of work, and my mother-in-law helped in the house while I packed the truck as tight as possible. JJ and Ann left around midnight and I stayed behind to shampoo the carpets to help remove some kid related stains that had shown up over the year. I finally finshed up around 2AM and headed back to the hotel to crash.

What a day…
